Just as Eve, the Bride of Adam, was formed from the side of Adam, so too, the Catholic Church - the
Bride of Christ (the Second Adam) - was formed from Christ's side pierced on the Cross. The Catholic
Church is the Church instituted by Jesus Christ Himself to be the new family of God. The Twelve Apostles
were the first bishops, and St Peter was the first Pope. The current Pope Benedict XVI is the 265th pope in a long
list of popes.
Of the Christian writings being circulated and used in the Liturgy in the early centuries of the Church,
the Catholic Church decided which writings were divinely inspired and to be included in the Christian book of
Holy Scripture - the Bible. The Catholic Church decided which books to include in the Bible by virtue of
Her Authority given by Christ and it is by this motherly authority that the Church also guides her children
on how to interpret Holy Scripture properly.
The teaching given by Christ to His Catholic Church is known as Divine Revelation and is contained in
Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition. The teaching of Christ has been safeguarded, proclaimed and explained
by the Catholic Church throughout the centuries. This teaching is articulated in The Catechism of the
Catholic Church.
