The marble pavement of the sanctuary of the upper church conceals the crypt , wherein lies the Imperial
Family.
The crypt is both sober and sumptuous. Romanesque in style, like the crypt of Saint Denys where the
Emperor had hoped to be buried, the marble inlaid star in the floor, the granite sarcophagi and the altar
of Saint Louis, all remind the visitor of Les Invalides and Napoleon I’s resting place. Few enjoy burial
with the dignity enjoyed by the Imperial family at Farnborough. For more than one hundred years, monks of
the Benedictine order have faithfully attended to the Empress's desire that her family should rest in a
place of prayer and silence.
