resent ommunity
The youngest member of our community is in his twenties and the oldest in his nineties, others bridge the
gap between these extremes fairly evenly.
Our Abbot is not yet forty years old. He entered the monastery as a 19 year-old and has been here twenty
years. Our oldest was one of the first English monks sent here in 1947 when it became increasingly clear
that a French-speaking community could not attract vocations in England. Our Prior came to Farnborough in
the 1960’s. He began as a monk of Pluscarden in Scotland. One of our monks was a diocesan priest, another
an accountant, another a solicitor, another a hospital porter.
There is no usual route to becoming a Farnborough monk, but there is a certain character, a
certain family likeness. How would we like others to see us? We would like to be thought of as a family
whose monastic observance is strong, serious, and sincere and whose family life in the monastery is warm,
human, and generous.
