The monastic life as lived at Farnborough is the classical contemplative way of living the Rule of Saint
Benedict. The monks concentrate on what is specific to the monastic vocation. We find our manner of living
described often as ‘continental’, not only because of the French history of our house but because the
absence of school and parish distinguishes us from our brethren of the English Benedictine Congregation.
We rejoice in our monastic culture and are nourished by it. The daily rhythm of the chanted offices, of our
manual work, and of our study, is both nourishing and demanding.
Fundamentally, the monastic life is nothing more and nothing less than the Christian life, lived to the
full. We are a people set apart to sing the praises of God (1 Peter 2:9). It is also nothing less and
nothing more than human life lived to the full.
