In addition to the various tasks the monks undertake, the mundane things of life are not forgotten. Daily
chores like cooking and cleaning are shared out amongst the brothers on the weekly rota. St Benedict
tells us that no one should be exempt from service in the kitchen, since this leads to an increase of
charity.
Simple tasks such as cooking, cleaning, setting tables and serving one another take on a tremendous
significance when performed in a spirit of service and humility in the light of the gospel. Taking pride
in the cleanliness and order of our house helps root our stability and our love of the monastery.
