The Rule of Thumb for professed monks is that mornings are dedicated to study and afternoons to manual
work. For the novices, studies and reading material are prescribed, whereas for junior monks studies are
tailored to their individual needs and aptitudes. Studies are encouraged by Father Abbot.
Monastic formation by no means ends with solemn profession, and all are encouraged to continue their
intellectual formation according to their individual aptitude and the needs of the community. Theological
formation has, in our community, traditionally taken place in Oxford or Rome, in addition to tuition by
correspondence and by visiting professors.
